Osa's wild ride

Dec 07

So over the weekend Osa’s happy face has been replaced with panting and crying. She is experiencing some pain and we are trying to help her get through it. It takes her between 30-45 minutes outside hopping about to finally potty and that we feel is putting too much strain on her recovery.  We’ve spoken to the vet several times and she is now pretty much maxed out on her meds save dosing her with some trazadone to help with the agitation.

Good days and bad days… yup.

Okay, just my unprofessional “for whatever it’s worth 2¢”.

Yes, you are exactly right, 35 – 40 minutes hopping around is waaaay too much activity at this point! When you say maxed out on meds, what is she taking and how much? Or, IF I’m reading this right, Osa is NOT on any pain meds??? Waaaay to early in recovery to not be on pain meds, especially for a larger dog. She is showing signs of pain and discomfort.

This is still so early and she just needs to rest, take her pain meds on a consistent basis. The only other suggestion I coukd offer is wait until the absolute last minute to take her ojt to potty…to the point where she is about to pee in her puppy pants…and then take her out. Make her hold it as long as possible and then just take her to a very confined area and step away.

Maybe you could talk to the vet about givi g smaller doses of lain meds more frequently?? Again, just throwing ideas out there.

This is why we say recovery is full of ups and downs! The ups will start to be more frequent and her sparkle will come back! Promise!

    Hugs to all!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

She probably has very slre muscles and strained back muscles so the Rimadyl should help with that.

.ost vets here send dogs home with Tramadol, Gabapentin, Rimadyl and an antibiotic and with a two weeks supply, plus a few extra.

Thanks for the feedback. We are trying to keep her activity at an absolute minimum. Osa has always been fickle on where she potty’s and can be stubborn about it when she was feeling fine. Add rain and her general discomfort and it gets worse. She is on all the meds mentioned, Tramadol 3x/day, Gabapentin 3x/day, Rimadyl 2x/day, and the antibiotic (forgot name) 1x day.

If she’s hopping about for 30/45 minutes, then I agree it is probably a big source of the pain and discomfort you’re seeing. I assume the time it takes her is not because of constipation or something else because you say she’s always been like this. Making her wait like Sally suggests is one good suggestion. If she’s at all constipated we’ve discovered the miracles of sweet potato/pumpkin in the food so you might try that. But if it is simply that she’s picky (and has always been picky) and she’s maxed out on meds right now, you may simply have to let her self-limit. That is, she’ll have to choose which is more important, finding the perfect spot or having some pain.

I posted a comment but I’m getting a different screen now, so who knows if that one has disappeared! In any case, I was just going to add that some of Osa’s panting could be from the Tramadol. Our experience was that Tramadol caused a lot of anxiety, hyper-sensitivity to noise and panting. In our case, we saw a big drop-off in panting once we were off Tramadol. Hope my original comment makes it also….
