Osa's wild ride

Nov 30

Just a short week ago we got the shocking news that Osa Menor, our beautiful 115 lb 4 year old Anatolian Shepard Dog had a bone tumor just above her left wrist.  We had a biopsy performed, which tested positive for osteosarcoma.  I am stunned at the rate this cancer developed in her leg. Luckily no masses showed on her chest xrays.

I found this site quickly online and after reading some inspirational accounts of tripawd parents, my husband and I gained the courage to proceed with an amputation and follow on chemotherapy.  Osa is a strong healthy girl, and we have reasonable assurance she will recover well.  She goes in for the surgery tomorrow morning and I am preparing myself for this life changing event.

I know I don’t have to explain to anyone here about the level of love we have for our ‘daughter’.  Its going to be a wild ride.

Thanks for your support!

Brian and Matt,

…soon to be new tripawd parents.

Welcome Brian and beautiful Osa to the club nobody wanted to join! We are so hoppy that you have found us. Rest assured that the Tripawd Nation will have your back as you begin your tripawd journey!

We have at least one other Anatolian Shepherd member, his name is Cemil and I think he was about the same age when he had his amputation. I recently saw his mom and she says he is still doing well 5(?) years later 🙂 Here is his blog: http://cemil.tripawds.com/

If you have not seen it already check out these links as well, which are full of helpful tips and info on all things tripawd:

You will find the answers to alot of your questions at these links. I love the blogs but new posts can go up and down pretty fast and sometimes few people see them so if you have a burning question and are not getting an answer hop on over to the forums and post there as well.

We are looking forward to following Osa’s journey and seeing more pictures of your beautiful girl!

    Welcome, and good luck tomorrow.
My first tripawd was a little pug named Maggie. The first tripawd she met in person was a 15o lb front amp Anatolian Shepard named Cemil. Cemil lost his leg to OSA and is still hoping, although slowly now, 6 years later! Not all are so lucky of course, but it does happen.
You might want to post in the forums if you have any questions and/or concerns. Lots more people are over there and can share their experiences.

Oh Osa, you’re so pretty. I just love Anatolians. They have such expressive faces. And you’re right, you don’t need to explain how much you love her. It isn’t an easy choice to amputate a leg, but you’re giving her a chance to be pain free again. On amp-day, get the house ready (nonslip flooring) and have a quiet place for her to recover. Keep on track w/ her pain meds. Communicate any concerns w/ your vet. Don’t get discouraged if she has some ups and downs. You’ll be surprised at how well she does I bet.

Thanks all for the kind words. Osa is out of surgery now and staying the night recovering in the pawspital. We were told she did great. I’ll update again when she comes home.

    Thanks again.
